Print Quantity 2

This is an “add-on” to the article Print Quantity 1.

I come from a old print era of bigger is better. I could get the print run down to almost under a buck a book--always my goal. After all, that’s huge profit margin! I remember the old saying, “It’s not how you sell that makes you money, it’s how you buy!”

Even in that world back in 1992, the idea of big print runs wasn’t always the best use of money. My boss came to me and congratulated me on the great unit price, but then suggested we not fill the warehouse with books in January that we would sit on until November or December. He suggested that a shorter run reprinted 3 times during the year (turning that money over) is a better use of money than having it tied up in inventory.

So what about in today’s world; Does that rule still apply? Is your cash tight? These are great questions. I would again go back to a previous article: How many do you need? Our world of Short Runs makes it possible to print as you need.

I’m not talking about “One-Offs” as they have been called. That system confuses the term POD (Print On Demand) where the book isn’t printed until after it’s been ordered with having a good working amount of what you need, when you need it in as little as 10 working days. One word comes mind: EXPENSIVE! There’s no profit margin in one-offs or in runs of less than 300.

I suggest a short run of 300-500 books that can take care of local bookstores, friends, family and mailings to publishers, newspapers and radio stations (press releases and reviews).
