Marketing Ideas...

Now that I have a book... What’s next?

Sales and marketing are next on your “to do” list. Nothing happens until there’s an exchange. Both of these are still different than Distribution (discussed below). I’ll begin by saying there are as many ways to Market your title as there are roads to Rome. Should they all lead to the same place? Yes, but at different speeds, different directions and at different costs. It might be said the fastest will probably be the most expensive. But before dumping a ton of money into this, look at all the options and keep good records.

Make a spreadsheet; No cost, Low cost, Medium cost and High cost.

Brainstorm all the various ways of getting your book sold and put these into the Costs Chart. Start at the No Cost and Low Cost and keep tight records; Dollars spent vs. Books sold. Part of your print run should be dedicated (sacrificed) for the greater cause. What I mean by that is, if you want your book to be reviewed, you’ll need to send a “promo copy” to someone for a review. Look to radio stations, newspapers, and even dedicated book reviewers (check the web for the ones that will do your title any good).

Amazon.com is a place to start. It may not be where you’ll be forever, but it’s at least exposure. In your email campaign you can at least put, “available on Amazon” and that’s better than nothing. They want to be both the bookstore and the distributor and take a cut for both. Check the different programs they offer and make your decision.

A book Distributor is mostly an outlet to get your book to the bookstores. The cost to you happens when the book is sold at the cash register. They’ll pay you less the bookstore and the distribution fees as in this example: A $10 book (retail) less 40% (bookstore) less 15% (distributor) gives you $4.50. This is an example of what I’ve seen and may or may not reflect what’s currently being done (my disclaimer). The distributor is generally not known for promotion or advertising your title. If they offer any at all, they may place a small ad on a flyer they send out, but they’ll sell the space to you (and others) making the flyer free for them.
