Do You “Offer” ISBNs and Barcodes?

This is really a trick question. We don’t “offer” any ISBNs. The ISBN is made up of the Publisher’s prefix along with other information (covered in another blog). This number is linked to the publisher. It tells the world who published the book. If you write a book and submit it a publisher and they accept the work, then it becomes their work and they put their number on it.

Does the author have to have an ISBN?

The first question to ask is why you’re wanting an ISBN. You’re not required by law to have one and not all books are headed for the market place. If you want to sell in the marketplace then you’ll need one. You’re welcome to contact RR Bowker (U.S. representative: http://www.isbn.org) or you can download our form to register yourself as a publisher and obtain your own ISBN or block of numbers.

Can I use one of your numbers?

This question has been asked many times. My answer is, “Who do you want the book to show as the publisher, since that number belongs to the publisher?” That’s the deciding factor. If we use one of our numbers, Sunrise Publishing becomes the official publisher and it electronically “marries” us together for the life of the book. I won’t/can’t sell you an ISBN since I'm not a registered agent of RR Bowker.

What about barcodes?

Yes, we make barcodes. We can take your ISBN and make a barcode with it and give it to our design department (when we design your cover) or we can email it to your designer so they can build it into the design of your cover. We will send it in .eps format with fonts turned to outlines. Pricing is reasonable and charged for each barcode we make. This is covered in another blog as well.

More Questions? Just ask.
