Fresh
Eyes. . .
Have
your manuscript proofread by several people (another set of fresh eyes).
Many
short-run books have a good storyline but are peppered with simple
spelling errors, improper punctuation, and flaws with sentence construction.
A
common mistake Im seeing is the proper use of its
and its. The spell checker will NOT catch this one,
and youd better know the proper usage!
In
regard to the writing itself, watch for problems with
characterization, shifting point of view, weak plot line, wordiness,
irrelevant material, an obvious lack of research, etc.
Just
as publishers and agents want to work with experts, your
self-published, short-run book should show your expertise in regard
to the writing and presentation.
No
matter who is printing your book, do not allow the book to be
printed until you are ready and that it is as perfect as possible.
The
only red flag to this philosophy is that, Perfection is
the Enemy of Done!
