Back Cover Endorsements and Blurb

How do I go about getting endorsements and blurbs for the back of my book? Is there any difference between an endorsement and a blurb? Who should I ask and how do I ask them?

I’m calling the teaser text the blurb about the author or book and the endorsement is from someone else about the author or book.

About the endorsement; the “who” is important, but may not be as important as the words and the length. Some people feel they need a big name with ranking initials. This might be true if you were writing a psychology book and wanted a psychologist (Ph.D.) to endorse it. But the person reading the blurb may relate better to a common everyday person. So depending on the subject matter and the target audience, you may want a blend of authority and more common, end-reader types.

In asking for an endorsement, I suggest you write and send to them what you’d like them to say. Then ask if they’d feel comfortable saying this about you or the project. Then suggest they feel free to modify it as necessary. This is also a lot easier on those you’re asking the favor of.

The benefits: You get the endorsement back in a timely manner to meet your press schedule. You control the content. You control the length. In this case bigger is not better, so keep it short. The people reading the back of your book are probably standing in a bookstore. They may be tired and hungry or have a little one that is tired and hungry.

The teaser text or blurb needs to be compelling! The front cover of the book stops them and says, “Pick me up!” The back cover of the book closes the sale and gets them to the cash register. Your book is why they got up this morning. Your book is the reason they walked into that bookstore. They’re so happy finding your book containing all of life’s answers; they’ve started reading it while standing in line at the cash register.
